Making Memories Monday: March Catch Up and April Suggestions

I know this is over two weeks late, but I really was excited about the March pictures to take.  So I decided to finish it up today.  But sit tight afterwards!  I need some advice from you.  🙂

March Pictures to Take (in April!)

DSCN5167My Car

I took a different spin on this one and decided to take several pictures of my car, telling a story.  His name is Wink, because he’s periwinkle.  I didn’t really dig the name Perry as a shorthand, because it was too human of a name, and thought Wink was more creative.  Wink was gifted to me after I graduated college.  He used to belong to my dad.  He’s 14 years old at the moment, and I hope he has at least a few more good years, because I don’t drive him very far very often.  That doesn’t mean he’s without a few bumps and bruises–character, as I like to call it.  So here’s a tribute to my trusty Wink:

1 & 2:  Some dings that Wink has taken:  the back is from a hit and run near the mall; the front one is from my latest apartment complex.  The neighbor’s emergency brake was on the fritz and when I was pulling out of my driveway, their car slowly slid into mine.  😦
3:  I have to have tunes, and more often than not it’s a CD (I’m still “old school” and don’t play MP3s in my car.  This is a sort of exception, though.  It’s a mix CD I made on iTunes specifically for my 30th birthday.)
4 & 5:  Soon after the car was gifted to me, the hubs got me some fuzzy unicorn stickers.  I don’t remember if it was his idea or mine, but one of those stickers got stuck onto my steering wheel.  I suffer from anxiety, so I took to rubbing the unicorn for comfort.  Eight years after the fact, all the fuzz has worn off and the horn has all but crumbled because I not-so-secretly believe in the soothing qualities of the unicorn horn (thought it was a horse, didn’t you?).
6 & 7: Around 2007 or so, the driver’s side visor no longer liked to stay up.  The plastic that it was anchored to had worn down so much that it had nothing to support it.  So for a few months, I just left it in the down position until one day the plastic couldn’t even hold it up that way.  I’ve taken to always having sunglasses in my car as a precaution and have just gotten used to it.  I do still have the visor in the off chance that someone knows how to affix it back on in working condition.
8:  I’ve laid down towels in the backseat to receive my doggie after muddy or wet outings to the park or beach.
9:  On my back window is a sticker of the Filipino flag, bleached and worn from the weather.
10:  See those three square-shaped dents/scratches?  That’s from me being over-confident.  Outside my old apartment complex is a keypad.  You have to enter a code to get into the gate.  I got much too close to the railing that surrounds the gate.  The railing had three posts, all of which made a hearty bang as my poor Wink scraped them because I underestimated my distance from it.  This is why I’ve only been through a fast food drive through once in my entire life.  That’s a story for another time, but let’s just say my friend and I laughed ’til our sides hurt.

This is as good as it’s going to get for awhile, folks.  To put things in perspective, I’ve been meaning to paint my toes for about a month and a half now.  But it was good to treat myself to a some bright toesies.  Looking forward to the full-on, lotion/foot soak/massage pedi when I get around to it, though.  🙂  Nail polish:  Sally Hansen in Blizzard Blue, Wet ‘n’ Wild Burgundy Frost.  Necklace:  Charming Charlie.

DSCN5167March Madness events (people filling in brackets, friends watching games, fans wearing favorite team’s jerseys)

I’m not much of a sports fan.  Originally I was going to do a mock bracket, with my picks for which mascot would win, but never got around to doing it.  Then I was going to take a picture of me in my college sweatshirt, but wasn’t able to get a good picture and grew impatient.  So I give you a blast from my past, when I did elementary school cheer camp.  Close enough, right?

Self critique:  that high V is definitely not sharp enough.  😉

Now comes to the other part.  As you can see, I haven’t posted any April pictures yet.  That’s where I need your help.  Now that I’ve done a full year of my pictures to take series, I’d like to mix things up a little and take new pictures.  I’m going to scour Pinterest since Google didn’t really turn up any good suggestions, but I’d also like to hear what things you think are must-take pictures for certain months of the year.  Obviously I’d really like to hear ideas for April, but one of my goals is to compile a completely new list, so suggestions for other months are also up for grabs.  Can’t wait to see what you come up with!  🙂

Making Memories (and friends!) Monday: Short Snippets

I think I’ll switch it around this week and do the Friend Making Monday before the pictures.  Think I may just blow through this post quick.  Just one of them days…

If you’ve taken part in FMM then you know the rules. If you’re new, please take a moment to answer this week’s question on your own blog then add your link in the comments section here at: so we can all see your FMM questions and answers. Please invite your blog readers to add their links here too so everyone has to opportunity to be seen. The idea is to connect with other awesome bloggers so take a moment to post your own FMM post and comment on a couple of other posts. Now it’s time for this week’s topic!

Simple Questions

1. Outside my window I see…glorious trees, even though they’re shaking a bit more than I’m comfortable with due to the wind gusts…

2. My kitchen counters are…spacious even though they’re topped with many appliances.

3. Yesterday I drank…the rest of my XXX VitaminWater with breakfast.

4. My cell phone is…probably the most archaic thing you’ve ever seen, but I’m so technologically illiterate that it’s just perfect for me.  Though I guess I’d actually want a phone with a keyboard or touch screen so that it doesn’t take me an entire to day to send a text message.  (Still have to do the old school way of texting where you have to press the “2” button three times to get the letter c.

5. My computer is…ummm…multitasking?

6. My favorite reality show is…hmm..I’m sort of a reality TV junkie, so it’s hard to choose.  I’d probably say Project Runway, though I do like The Bachelor/ette, Dancing With the Stars, and many of the cooking competitions like Hell’s Kitchen, Top Chef, etc.  Looking forward to The Taste, which premieres on Tuesday the 22nd.  (Do cooking competitions count as reality TV?)

7. My workouts are…nonexistent since moving in September.  My “workouts” consist of walking the dog at the park and dancing to the radio.

8. The last book I read is…there’s a difference between “book I read” and “book I FINISHED reading”.  Last book I read was “Quiet” (the one about introverts), but it was only the sample on the Kindle.  I’m strongly considering buying the whole thing, though, because the sample was definitely enough to capture my interest.  Last book I finished was “Beautiful Redemption”, which is the last in the young adult Beautiful Creatures series.  The movie that corresponds with the first book in the series is coming out on Valentine’s Day, and truth be told, I did a very non-30-year-old squeal when I saw the trailer for the first time last night.  Before I hear any Twilight comments, let me just say that the writing in this book is 1000 times better, so please read the series before you judge.  I also really really hope that the movie does it some kind of justice instead of a horrible Hollywood mockery.

9. My week will be….the first week with a choir rehearsal in about a month.  Interesting.  Then poker party on Friday, so that should be fun.

10. So far 2013 has been…encouraging.  I have a feeling that this just might be my breakthrough year where I have a lot of success on many different fronts.  Here’s hoping!

And now on to the picture portion of the evening!  Since I didn’t have the chance to get the rest of the December pictures and haven’t run across any January pictures yet, I decided to instead post my favorite 12 Making Memories Mondays pictures from 2012.  After all, that’s really what this project was supposed to be for, anyway:  to glean pictures from the year to use as gems for your scrapbook.  So here’s a recap!

Peeled Easter eggs still tinted on the inside.
April 2
A rare and probably never-to-be-duplicated picture of my father and I on a hike.  This was on his birthday.

May 1
A shot of a grave on Memorial Day.  Probably the gutsiest picture I have ever taken, given that I’m terrified of cemeteries.
May 2 May 3
For those of you who are actually counting, I see these two pictures as one package deal.  These are pictures of mine and my hubby’s grandmas, our only living grandparents.  Upon reviewing these pictures today, I find it so sweet that both of them still wear their wedding rings.  Both of them were only married once in their lives, and both of their husbands have long since passed away.
This was during a picture month where I had to grab old pictures because I couldn’t find any current pictures of what was on the list.  Indeed, this is from my own wedding day, which wasn’t in June.  It was in March, almost 5 years ago.  🙂  Such a great day!

I’m looking forward to getting a full year of pictures in 2013.  Stay tuned for Mondays!  🙂

Making Memories Monday: Out of Sequence

Ladies and gents, I know I was super-excited to show you the picture haul that was going to be my November pictures to take.  And I really was.  I wanted to show you the result of our very first time hosting Thanksgiving, and the subsequent hosting of a Black Friday dinner.  There was going to be a lovely, plump turkey, and our family gathered ’round the table.  I even found a flock of geese flying south when I thought I wasn’t going to (a story for another time).

Alas, I can’t find my camera, and I’ve come down with a sickness where one of the symptoms is a laziness so encompassing that I don’t feel like looking for the camera.  😉  So those pictures will probably come in December.  Trust me, they’ll be worth the wait.

In other news, I’ve completely failed NaNoWriMo.  Like, utterly, gloriously failed.  This is the first year I’ve participated where I didn’t even try to see it through to the end (after all, there are two more days in November); that’s how little motivation I had to continue.  It does disappoint me a little bit, but in reality, my heart wasn’t really into the plot from the beginning.  I tried to make it work for a good two weeks and just wasn’t feeling it.  By that time, I didn’t feel like starting over with only two weeks left.  Next year, though, I hope to start anew.  And I’m fully intending to write something before then.  I desperately need to write.  It’s been much too long for someone who has a writer’s soul like me.

That brings me to the mis-labeling of my title.  You astute readers may realize that it’s not actually Monday; it’s Wednesday (or even Thursday in some parts of the world).  But as the above paragraph mentions, I have nothing to bring to the table for Written Word Wednesday.  I don’t even have the pictures.  I do, however, have the trusty Friend Making Monday questionnaire.  So thank goodness for that!  🙂  Two days late, but hey, better late than never, right?  🙂

Dear Santa:  List at least ten things that you may or may not need that you’d love to find under your tree this year!

Hahaha!  It’s funny; my family has started a “tradition” of sending out Christmas List requests the week before Thanksgiving.  My list is always ridiculously long, because I never expect all of it and I like being surprised (more choices mean less of an idea of what I’ll actually get).  But there’s no way I’m going to put that list here.  I think I’ll modify this a bit and write a “Things I’d Love to Find Under My Tree but Would Really Only Happen in My Wildest Dreams” list.  In other words, this list is not one I’d ever send to my family, for fear of them thinking I’m a needy, greedy little child.  Here we go!*  😀

1)  An acceptance letter from the boss of my dream job, asking me to start as soon as possible.

2)  A potion that my doggie can drink to make him live as long as me and/or my husband, with no horrific side effects (i.e., he’ll stay a healthy dog the whole time).

3)  Enough money to get everyone on my gift list something ridiculous that they would never expect, like a new car or a Birkin bag or paying off their college debt or a trip around the world.

4) A machine that would enable me to be in more than one place at once, effectively giving myself more time to do things in a day.

5) Every last thing on my house decorating wishlist.

6)  A visit from Jillian Harris to help my decorate my house with said things on my wishlist.

7) A clothes shopping spree with the wardrobe stylists of Lauren Graham as Lorelai Gilmore, Jillian Harris, and Taylor Swift, complete with finding all the clothes I want in my size!

8) A $1000 gift certificate to a new independent bookstore that my city decided to open up!  (An almost-as-good alternative:  an alert on my computer saying Borders has gone back into business and a new one will be opening up in my city the day after Christmas.)

9)  Two tickets on the Rocky Mountaineer.  I first heard about this on Jillian Harris’s season of The Bachelorette (wow, I just realized how I sound so obsessed with her because I just mentioned her like three times on this list.  Purely coincidental) and I’ve been itching to go ever since.

10)  A magic vehicle that would take me to the top 100 Christmas decoration/light displays in the world in the course of a week.  I love looking at that stuff!  😀  Oh, and this trip would be with Taylor Swift, because I think she would be as giddy and excited as me about it and we could giggle and squeal like schoolgirls about it all.

*This entire list is null and void if there is world peace.  I will take that one singular thing over any of the abovementioned completely selfish and indulgent things any day.

Making Memories Monday: “Best Of” Picture Catch Up & FMM

As you guys may or may not have noticed, there has been a serious lack of pictures on Mondays from my Pictures to Take Throughout the Year list.  I know I’ve been using it as my token excuse, but really, the lack of pictures perfectly coincided with our house-buying adventures.  So I’m going to cut corners here and just do a “best of”:  my favorite picture from the months that I’ve missed that also happen to be on the list for that particular month.  Here are the ones from August, September, and October:

Vacations and Travels (August)

I have to say that this picture is very dear to me because it has a lot of meaning.  This place is a place where my husband and I got together with friends and family for some camping and bonding.  He’d been doing it for over 18 years; I’d been doing it for 10.  This year is the last year that we were able to do it because the land that we used is going to get zoned and developed.  So we bid a bittersweet goodbye to this place that we hold dear in our hearts.  Indeed, this is a vacation and travel worthy of memories.

Leaves changing color (September)

Technically, I believe this picture was actually taken in October, not September since we got a late start to fall, but I love it.  I think it perfectly shows the leaves in varying states of turning colors.

Pumpkins at night (October)

Usually the hubby and I go all out and complicated for our jack-o’-lantern design, but we just didn’t have the time this year (we carved it at 5PM on Halloween night!).  But I still think it’s cute.  Sometimes simpler is more.  🙂

…Now that that’s over with, I am going to say right here and now that I am NOT going to skimp on November and December.  I plan on capturing every single one of the pictures on the list, mostly because this is my favorite time of year and all those pictures sound like fun ones to take.  And a little because I really want to start maintaining my blog on a regular basis again.  So stay tuned for those!  🙂

And now, it’s Friend Making Monday time!  If you want to participate, too, make sure to link up at Kenlie’s blog  🙂

Ten Reasons To Be Thankful

1. Having a home that I can honestly say that I love.

2. Friends who are willing to go out of their way to travel and see us, and by the same token, friends who are up for being visited.

3. The near-end of the campaign season!

4. “Stop and smell the roses” moments, which I have been experiencing much more of lately.

5. Opportunities to take walks and clear my mind.

6. My always-up-for-a-cuddle, big-mouthed-smile, unconditionally-loving doggie Dexter.

7. The ability to read and the appreciation of the education and experiences it took to get me to the level of reading I have today.  And books in which you can escape into.  And bookstores.  (I know those are three things, but they’re all related.)

8. A husband who cares enough about where he lives that he’s willing to work hard at home improvement projects like installing sump pumps, putting in an extra roof vent, and putting in motion-sensor lights.  And making my dream of having a window seat come true!  (And, you know, who loves me, but that’s a given.)

9.  Family who, at the end of the day, just want to provide a good life for you (though at times this can be annoying, their hearts are in the right place).

10.  Creative outlets.  🙂

Now it’s your turn to answer this week’s question!  Don’t forget to come back and link up in the comments!  Happy Monday!
